Most administrators and helpdesks are very familiar with the following situation. After a computer is reinstalled a user calls and tells them they are missing their address book in Outlook. You spend a lot of time digging in backups and cannot find any address in his/her address book at any point in time…. Day Dreaming

After investigating a little further it will turn out that the user never saved an address to his/her address book but instead relied on the auto complete feature of outlook.

In a best case scenario you made a backup of the .nk2 file or can copy it from the old computer as described in the following microsoft article:

.nk2 is the extension of the file that holds the addresses of your outlook complete cache. Unfortunately the file format is undocumented by Microsoft.

If you do not have a backup of the nk2 file you're left with the following options.

  • tell the user he/she has bad luck Angry
  • copy all the addresses you can find in an blank e-mail, and press the autocomplete button Slant
  • buy expensive software (see Useful Links) Frown
  • find other freeware tools (see Useful Links) Wink
  • and my personal favorite.... use the program provided on this site Grin
